轻质碳酸钙，又称沉淀碳酸钙，简称轻钙，是将石灰石等原料段烧生成石灰和二氧化碳，再加水消化石灰生成石灰乳（主要成分氢氧化钙），通入二氧化碳碳化石灰乳生成碳酸钙沉淀，经脱水、干燥和粉碎制得。或者由碳酸纳和氯化钙进行复分解反应生成碳酸钙沉淀，经脱水、干燥和粉碎制得。轻质碳酸钙的沉降体积为2.4-2.8mL/g。普通轻钙的颗粒在充分分散开来的情况下呈枣核形，长径约5～12μm，短径为1～3μm，平均粉径为2～3μm。但由于末经过表面处理，在轻钙生成并经脱水、干燥后，往往众多粒子凝聚在一起形成像葡萄嘟噜一样的团粒，因此在国标中对轻钙的质量要求仅仅是从125μm 和45μm筛余物上来判断，并没有直接反映出真实的粒径大小和分布。
轻钙粒度比重质碳酸钙小,吸油量比重质碳酸钙大,价格比重质碳酸钙高。他们都是乳胶漆中常用的填料,最好搭配使用。 轻钙在沉降方面好些，但吸油量大于重钙，价格一般也较重钙贵些，尽管稳定性方面不如重钙，但还是具备稳定性的，即使是外墙漆，其应用量也是很大的！
通常用作填料，广泛用于人造地砖、橡胶、塑料、造纸、涂料、油漆、油墨、电缆、建筑用品、食品、医药、纺织、饲料、牙膏等日用化工行业，作填充剂起到增加产品的体积，降低生产成本。 轻质碳酸钙是以石灰石为原料, 并可以用于牙粉、牙膏、化妆品等日用化工制品中，还可以用于有机合成、冶金、玻璃和石棉生产中。
