Arts and culture
BP is proud to have been a Premier Partner of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad and London 2012 Festival, supporting several arts and cultural programmes across the UK
The Olympic Journey: The Story of the Games exhibition at the Royal Opera House, London
Arts and culture have played an important part in the Olympic movement going all the way back to ancient Greece. So it was fitting that these areas played a major role in London 2012.
The London 2012 Cultural OlympiadBP was a Premier Partner of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad, a demonstration of BP’s ongoing commitment to support UK arts and culture. Spread over four years, the Cultural Olympiad took place in venues across the UK and was the largest cultural celebration in the history of the modern Olympic and Paralympic Games.
As part of the Cultural Olympiad, BP’s arts and cultural partners helped to put together extraordinary programmes and events for young people, to get them involved and to be more creative.
London 2012 Open Weekend supported by BP: Open Weekend was an annual highlight of the Cultural Olympiad and an opportunity for the UK to actively mark the countdown to the London 2012 Games at arts, culture and sports events across the UK.
Tate Movie Project: BP supported the Tate Movie Project, with Legacy Trust UK and the BBC. The Tate Movie Project was the first of its kind; an animated film made by and for children across the UK. With the talents of Aardman Animations, the project involved over 34,000 5 -13 year olds. The finished film, "The Itch of the Golden Nit" was screened in London’s Trafalgar Square in July 2011 and at cinemas across the UK in August.
The Olympic Journey: The Story of the Games. BP and the Royal Opera House joined forces with The Olympic Museum in Lausanne to create a unique exhibition telling the Olympic story through the endeavours of ancient and modern Olympians. The exhibition, which was open in the Royal Opera House from 28th July through to 12th August 2012, included artefacts from athletes through the ages, audio and film, the summer Olympic Medals since 1896 and the summer Olympic Torches since 1936.
The BP Portrait Award: Next Generation. The Next Generation programme focused on giving young people aged 14-19 free opportunities to learn about portraiture under the tutelage of previous BP Portrait Award winners. In 2011 and 2012 the programme expanded beyond the capital, with Summer Schools taking place at venues across the UK. An interactive website was also developed, with behind-the-scenes insights into the BP Portrait Award exhibition as well as interviews with artists and a look at the judging process.
Shakespeare's theatre of the world: This major exhibition at the British Museum provided a unique insight into the emerging role of London as a world city in 1612, as seen through the eyes of Shakespeare. Objects, quotes and performance brought Shakespeare’s London to life. Exhibits included jewels, paintings, maps and one of the few surviving first folios of Shakespeare’s plays.
As the world converged on London for the Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Cultural Olympiad culminated in the London 2012 Festival, which featured world-class exhibitions, concerts, performances and events.
