Self Serve

Self Serve and Card operated dispensers are increasing features of the General Aviation Sector.

Self serve and Card operated dispensers are positioned, mostly where a staffed site would not prove economic or 24 hour staffing is not viable, but fuelling is required. Currently there are several initiatives in Air BP globally to provide self fuelling facilities.

The Aviation self serve process is almost identical to the process used for self serve on a petrol station forecourt.

There are a few differences in the procedures adopted such as static bonding to be used, entry of a tail number rather than a vehicle registration number, inclusion of Duty and VAT options, higher flow rates and the volume display.

Pilot Instructions for use of self serve facilities

(N.B this may vary depending on the location, so please refer to the local board of instructions for card procedure)

Ensure aircraft engine is off, brakes are on, and wheels are chocked.
Remove the bonding clip and bond fuelling equipment to aircraft at the designated point or to a non-casted unpainted aircraft part. Do not fasten to a control surface.
Check the grade of fuel required by your aircraft
Swipe the card reader with your card and answer all questions.
Wheel steps in front of wing if needed (Steps may be caught in a gust of wind or aircraft exhaust and cause damage to aircraft.)
Remove the nozzle from dispenser and run hose to the aircraft.
Position ladder to ensure hose falls vertically and will not damage de-icer boot or leading edge of wing.
Remove filler cap and insert nozzle into aircraft fuelling port and squeeze trigger gently. Do not let fuel surge into tank.

Ensure that the side of the nozzle is always in contact with the fuelling orifice during fuelling.
Watch the level of the fuel to prevent a spill.
NEVER WEDGE OPEN THE FUELLING NOZZLE LATCH!
