Misfuelling
Don't Assume, Confirm!!
Delivery of the wrong grade of fuel into an aircraft is termed "misfuelling" and can have disastrous consequences. Every year around the world a number of aircraft are refuelled with the incorrect grade of fuel. Fortunately, this error is usually detected before the aircraft takes off, but sadly, this is not always the case.If an Avgas powered aircraft is inadvertently refuelled with Jet Fuel, there can be sufficient Avgas remaining in the aircraft’s fuel lines and carburettors to enable the aircraft to taxi and even take off. When the Jet Fuel reaches the engine, often at a critical time during the take off, the engine can fail and cause a forced landing or worse - the aircraft may crash.A similar situation can occur if Avgas is put onto an aircraft which should have been refuelled with Jet Fuel (fortunately the consequences of this are usually less serious).Help us to help you.
Air BP has implemented the following actions to help prevent misfuelling’s taking place:- Grade confirmation completed at all stages of the fuelling operation from receipt of order until fuelling begins.
- All overwing fuelling equipment fitted with grade selective nozzle spouts.
- Use of a fuel order form is necessary to indicate the fuel required and must be completed by the pilot. Where doubt exists the aircraft will not be fuelled until the order form is complete.
- Grade decals should be displayed adjacent to aircraft fill points to indicate the fuel to be used. Jet Fuel or Avgas.
You can help reinforce our strict refuelling procedures and operator training and help to ensure that your aircraft is never misfuelled by taking the following actions:Ensure you display fuel grade labels on all aircraft.
Air BP can provide you with your Fuel Grade Warning decals free of charge. We strongly advise you to fit these adjacent to the overwing refuelling ports of your aircraft. These labels provide the best warning to our operators of the grade of fuel you require every time your aircraft is refuelled.

Where a grade decal or marking is not shown on the aircraft, special care must be taken to allow for language difficulties/boundaries and in the possibility that the aircraft could be unfamiliar to the airport.Selective fuel orifice.
Most manufacturers of Avgas powered aircraft produce low cost kits which can be fitted to the overwing fuelling ports to reduce their diameter and thus create a grade selective fuel port. We strongly advise you to have this simple device fitted to your aircraft.Misfuelling is one of the biggest risks the aviation industry faces.
