可发性聚苯乙烯（EPS）通称聚苯乙烯和苯乙烯系共聚物，是一种树脂与物理性发泡剂和其它添加剂的混合物。可发性PS可被加工成低密度（0．7—10．0ib／ft3）的泡沫塑料剂品。最常见的可发性聚苯乙烯是含有作为发泡剂的戊烷的透明PS粒料。由可发性聚苯乙烯制出泡沫塑料制品有几个专门步骤，这也是许多塑料树脂（包括可成型泡沫的聚烯烃及其共聚物）的一种特性。可发性PS可用来制造各种制品如咖啡杯、吸收能量的汽车用减震器或300 ft3大的泡沫塑料块。EPS的主要用途是一次性饮料杯、抗震包装以及隔热材料。
化学与性能:可发性聚苯乙烯是小颗粒状树脂，直径一般为0．01－0．1in。大多数这种颗粒是悬浮聚合生成的珠粒，而较大直径的颗粒也可通过切粒得到。采用的珠粒大小决定于最终泡沫制品的最小壁厚。较大的粒子膨胀制成低密度泡沫制品比较容易，较小的粒子则较易制成填充均匀的部件。
