卷帘窗发源于欧洲，卷帘产品已经有150多年的历史，它由木制的百页窗演变而来，虽然走过了木材、塑料、钢铁、中空铝合金直到现今流行的双层铝合金夹聚氨酯发泡填料的不同时期，但是，它时时结合着当时的科技体现着对人类居住空间的呵护。德国工业标准DIN19073对卷帘窗作了如下的定义：“卷帘窗是附加用作一个洞口的可收卷的隔离物。” 卷帘窗通常被安装于玻璃窗的外部，它的主要部件由铝合金构成，所以其具有很长的使用寿命，常见的驱动方式为室内皮带手动，曲柄摇杆手动或者电动。
卷帘窗具有如下几点重要的优点：
(1)保温性能：可以大大节省用于制冷、制热的能量，窗户是居室白天采光的主要渠道，它省去了电灯采光所需的能源。为了最大限度获得保温效能，须将卷帘窗安装于窗的外部，同时要保证在玻璃窗和卷帘窗之间留有空气层。
(2)隔音性能：通常情况下人们都希望有一个宁静的居室，特别是靠近街道、公路的居室。利用完全闭合、安装于玻璃窗外部的卷帘窗可以大大提高窗子的隔音效果。通过研究人们发现，卷帘窗与玻璃窗的间距越大，降噪效果越好。闭合的卷帘窗自身能降低18dB的噪音，如果与保温玻璃窗（4/12/4mm）组合在一起，可以获得37dB的综合隔音效果。
(3)防晒、遮阳性能：虽然有各种不同的遮阳防晒方法，而安装于玻璃窗外部的卷帘窗却是最理想的解决该难题的方案之一，因为其一，卷帘窗可以将绝大部分阳光反射掉；其二，卷帘窗还可以任意调整进入室内的阳光/光线；其三，它的使用基本不占用空间。通过降低进入室内的热量，人们可以节省用于空调机的许多电能。
(4)耐气候性能：卷帘窗具有抗风、抗雨雪和防沙的能力。给建筑物的门窗增添了一道防护屏障。
(5)防盗性能：卷帘窗也是一个美观的防护装置，完全关闭的卷帘窗可以防止玻璃窗被砖块、球的损坏，也能阻止小偷的侵入。在防盗方面对铝合金卷帘窗的认识是，其可以在一定程度上阻止小偷的入侵。采取一定的措施将大大提高卷帘窗的防盗性能，如：
1． 采用加强型卷帘面材，如双层钢质填聚氨酯型材，填充超硬聚氨酯的双层铝合金型材等；
2． 采用加强导轨，增加导轨的深度；
3． 加强各固定部位的连接可靠性；
4． 采用锁紧或者防上推机构；
5． 采用在建筑物上暗装的形式（即卷帘导轨、罩壳置于墙体内部）
