1.Principle
A sample is placed in a horizontal position and exposed to an electrical heater. Under the sample there is a box to collect drops.
Inside the box there is some cotton to detect if the drops are burning.
The heating source is a heater having a power of 500 Watts. The area exposed to radiation consists of a transparent Quartz plate of an diameter of 100 mm
2.Calibration
A heating flux measuring device (radiometer) of the Gardon foil type with a measuring range of at least 10 W/ cm2 is used for calibration.
The calibration of the heating flux measuring device has to be calibrated by a reference heating flux measuring device everytime the heater has to be calibrated. The reference heating flux measuring device has to be re-calibrated according a national standard.
3.Calibration check
The radiation density caused by the the energy impact, which has according to the calibration a radiation density of 3 W/cm2, has to be controlled often. At least once every 50 hours of operation. The device has to be calibrated again if the measured values have changed more than
0.06 W/cm2.
4.Procedure of calibration
The device has to be placed at a draught safe spot. The air velocity must not higher than 0.2 m/s. The heating flux device has to be inserted into the test rig instead of the sample. The black plate of the heating flux device must be located in the middle of the heater.
Then the power is turn on using the potentiometer POWER REGULATOR until the radiation density is 3 W/cm2 in the center of the heater surface. After the potentiometer was adjusted to provide the value 3 W/cm2 the potentiometer should not be re-adjusted for 5 minutes to stabilize it.
5.Sample
The sample must have the dimensions 70 mm x 70 mm.
If possible the samples should be production as the ready product. If the product is thicker than 13 mm its thickness has to be reduced to 13 mm at the side opposite to the side seen by the passengers. If this is not possible the test must be conducted in compliance with a Technical Service with the sample having the regular thickness. This, however, must be stated in the report. Composite materials are to be tested as homogeneous materials.
In case of materials consisting of different layers, not classified as component materials, all layers of a thickness up to 13 mm have to be tested on the side exposed to the interieur of a vehicle. The total mass of the sample must be at least 2 g. If the mass is below that a sufficient number of samples have to be added.
If both sides of the sample are different, each side has to be testesd, resulting in a test of eight samples.
Before the test the samples and the cotton have to be conditioned at a temperature of 23 ℃
6. Doing the calibration
1) Remove the sample holder.
2) Mount the calibration ring.
3) Connect the sensor to te amplifier.
4) Regulate the energy using the POWER REGULATOR potentiometer.
