乙二醇硬脂酸酯在表面活性剂复合物中加热后溶解或乳化，降温过程中会析出镜片状结晶，因而产生珠光光泽。在液体洗涤产品中使用可产生明显的珠光效果，并能增加产品的粘度，还具有滋润皮肤、养发护发和抗静电作用。与其它类型的表面活性剂相溶性好，且能体现其稳定的珠光效果及增稠调理功能。对皮肤无刺激，对毛发无损伤。相比之下乙二醇双硬脂酸酯产生的珠光较强烈，乙二醇单硬脂酸酯 产生的珠光较细腻。
