XLPE电缆料是一种含有机过氧化物如DCP(过氧化二异丙苯)的聚乙烯。这种过氧化物在高温高压及惰性气体环境下，与聚乙烯发生化学反应，使热塑性聚乙烯变成热固性(弹性体)的聚乙烯，即XLPE。


XLPE电缆有极佳的电气性能。介质损耗比纸绝缘和PVC绝缘都要小，XLPE电缆的电容也小。所以在没有有效星形接地系统中也可降低充电电流和接地故障电流。


极易敷设是 XLPE电缆的又一个优点。XLPE电缆有一个较小的弯曲半径，它比其他同类电缆轻而且有较为简单的终端处理。由于XLPE电缆不含油，所以在敷设XLPE电缆时不用考虑路线，也不存在由于淌油而无法敷设的情况。


极佳的抗老化特性及超强的耐热变形决定了交联聚乙烯电缆在正常运行温度( 90℃)、短时故障(130℃)及短路(250℃)条件下可允许大电流通过。
