Digital Communications Analysis
Accurate eye-diagram analysis is essential for character-izing the quality of transmitters used from 100 Mb/s to 40Gb/s. The 86100B was designed specifically for the
complex task of analyzing digital communications wave-forms. Compliance mask and parametric testing nolonger require a complicated sequence of setups andconfigurations. If you can press a button, you canperform a complete compliance test. The importantmeasurements you need are right at your fingertips,including:
• industry standard mask testing with built-in marginanalysis,
• extinction ratio measurements with accuracy andrepeatability, and
• eye measurements: crossing %, eye height and width, ‘1’and ‘0’ levels, jitter, rise or fall times and more.The key to accurate measurements of lightwave commu-nications waveforms is the optical receiver. The 86100Bhas a broad range of precision receivers integratedwithin the instrument.
• Built-in photodiodes, with flat frequency responses,yield the highest waveform fidelity. This provides highaccuracy for extinction ratio measurements.
• Standards-based transmitter compliance measure-ments require filtered responses. The 86100B has abroad range of filter combinations. Filters can be auto-matically and repeatably switched in or out of themeasurement channel remotely over GPIB or with afront panel button. The frequency response
of the entire measurement path is calibrated, and willmaintain its performance over long-term usage.• The integrated optical receiver provides a calibratedoptical channel. With the accurate optical receiver builtinto the module, optical signals are accuratelymeasured and displayed in optical power units.
