研究表明,活性炭表面化学性质主要由其表面化学官能团、表面杂原子和表面化合物确定。普通活性炭表面具有非极性和疏水性,对室内气体的吸附多属于物理吸附,能够吸附几乎所有的气体。但是,仅有物理吸附时只有极其微小的吸附能力,实用价值很小。而且活性炭是疏水性物质,有时缺乏对亲水性物质的吸附能力,此外物理吸附稳定性很差,在温度压力等条件变化时容易脱附而造成二次污染。表面化学改性主要改变活性炭的表面酸、碱性,引入或除去某些表面官能团,使其具有某种特殊的吸附或催化性能。对活性炭进行改性研究, 主要集中在氧化改性、还原改性及载杂原子和化合物改性等。由于室内空气混合物来源复杂,有的是极性的,有的是非极性的,这就需要对活性炭加以改性,使之能够吸附绝大部分气体污染物。
