陶粒表面是一层坚硬的外壳，这层外壳呈陶质或釉质，具有隔水保气作用，并且赋予陶粒较高的强度和吸咐能力。陶粒滤料的原材料主要是乳土、粉煤灰、页岩。 生物陶粒滤料可直接使用或用于制作生物陶粒滤料制品，污(淤)泥焙烧生物陶粒滤料原理与水泥生产中污泥燃烧处理原理基本一致。
页岩陶粒又称膨胀页岩。以黏土质页岩、板岩等经破碎、筛分，或粉磨后成球，烧胀而成的粒径在5㎜以上的轻粗集料为页岩陶粒。。目前页岩陶粒的主要用途是生产轻集料混凝土小型空心砌块和轻质隔墙板。
